“How has one’s history and story impacted one’s position within art education settings? How do these layered narratives impact how one sees one’s students and in turn how students see their teacher?”

Amy L. Pfeiler-Wunder, Fictions and Frictions of Professional Identity in Art Educational Settings

For this sketchbook entry, I wanted to include the most formative layers of my life-- my family, and my artistic influences. I had an idea to create an ornate frame that housed several photos which could be "pulled" through the page. I chose photos of my mother, my sister, and artists such as Frida Kahlo and Judy Chicago. These women have shaped my life in one way or another, and will continue to inspire me as a future educator in the classroom.

I began the spread by collaging magazine clippings and some scrapbooking paper I got from Michael's. I enjoy cutting, arranging, and pasting scraps of media to create something new. I left a pocket on the left side of the spread to hold all the photos. I then used gouache to paint the gold frame, taking inspiration from ornate frames found art in museums. I left a similar pocket on the left side of my frame so the photos could be "pulled" through. I arranged the photos in a meaningful order, and then hot glued them to some ribbon. Viola! I had my sketchbook spread inspired by Amy L. Pfeiler-Wunder's, essay on "Dressing Up" in the classroom.
